In the Arts (Shortcut Version)
In the Arts – Shortcut
Twenty cubes a thousand tons of weight
Come raining from an angry looking sky
Thirty names are screaming from a wall
A single one is fading on the fly
Wearing blue as blue can ever be
Particularly shoes forever high
No recipe for creed or guarantee
A streaming game in life called playing seek and hide
There were silent colors on your face
You are biding in a different place
Like a numbing arrow sticking in your side
You’re feeling up to it till the end of time
Till the end of time
Walking over faces is the favored kind of races in the arts
In the arts
Walking over faces is the favored kind of races in the arts
In the arts
Till the end of time, end of time, end of time
Till the end of time
In the arts
Till the end of time
There’s still a lot of traffic in the scene
Flying little peacocks in the air
I’ve lost the girl who’s stitching up her eyes
An episode of fate, but no one really cares.
Twenty cubes a thousand tons of weight
Have fallen from a weary looking sky
The thirty names keep sticking to a wall
A single one is flashing for a while
There were silent colors on your face
You are biding in a different place
Like a numbing arrow sticking in your side
You’re feeling up to it till the end of time

Wide Eyed
Wide-eyed
Burning swigs from the pool of your life
Searing ashes a flow
Someone is bound to the hell in his eyes
Bearing a lie – raring to go
Scared alone with the people
They never let you out of sight
(Well) you’re lost in a crowd
It makes you wanna die
(It makes you wanna die, die,
It makes you wanna die, die)
Staring into the deep of the night
Sparkling flashes aglow
Something found in the hell of my eyes
Hearing a sigh – bearing the blow
Despair is filling the people
But they still ain’t out of fight
Now the stars have a face
It makes me wanna cry.
Wide-eyed
The way you look around, look and see
Just make the fields go down right on me
You never want to feel it higher
Wide-eyed
The way you look around, look at me
Just make the sky come down over me
I never want to feel it higher
Wide-eyed – the way you look around
Wide-eyed – you make the sky come down
Wide-eyed – the way you stare at me
Wide-eyed – why do we have to be
Wide-eyed – the way you look around
you make the sky come down
the way you stare at me
Wide-eyed – why do we have to be
Wide-eyed
Take me out of the pool of my life
Facing the end of the show
Don’t give a damn for the hell in your eyes
Sick of the lies – wanting to go
Riding away with some people
We gonna get you out of mind
While you’re lost in your field
It makes you wanna cry.
Wide-eyed…
The way you look around, can’t you see
Just make the fields go down right on me
I never want to see it brighter

Clouds And Years
I walk alone
No doubt ‘n fear because I‘m leaving home
Not open to a role of any kind
I `ve been the one who wrote the lines
And not the one to seek or find
Gliding on the waves of my brain
Up and down is all the same
Open eyes are widely closed
What I know is going down the drain
All my life I used to ride above the skies
Over clouds and years I couldn’t see
Now that I have landed here back on the ground
I can tell how far these skies can be
I walk alone
Now and here and everywhere I roam
Wondering if me or them is blind
I try so hard to read the lines
That they have written right in my mind
Wading through the files of my brain
Having fun is not quite the same
Open eyes are widely closed
What I knew is going down the drain
All my life I used to ride above the skies
Over clouds and years I couldn’t see
Now that I have landed here back on the ground
I can tell how far these skies can be
I taste a feel of illusion
Floating in the air
Still know the state of confusion
can get you anywhere

Showing up soon, the man in the moon

Leaving his castle over the dune
Showing up soon, the man in the moon

Stranded people everywhere, going for the same
Going for the same
Alcohol ist second best, dropping from above
Dropping from above
Time has crumbled in the air, like a shredded dove
Like a shredded dove
Like a shredded dove
Lioness and millionaire, moaning on a roof
Safety is a limousine with windows bulletproof
Windows bulletproof
Cruising down the avenue, with a golden gun
I feel like I’m fading…
Beauty, balance, privacy, the beast is on the run
The beast is on the run
The beast is on the run
Leaving his castle over the dune
Showing up soon, the man in the moon

Man in the moon, just gone away..
Dropping from above, winding to entertain..
Just gone away, just gone away

I feel like I’m fading…
Riders on a cannonball, boots are back in town
Pillows, blankets, helmets on, it’s time to hunker down
It’s time to hunker down, it’s time to hunker down
Ali in the promised land, longing for relief
Winding to entertain..
Omar’s dancin’ in the street, taken for a thief
Taken for a thief
Business on the borderline, a ladder to the stars
Dropping from above
A backpack full of memories, close but no cigar
Close but no cigar
A smartphone takes him by the hand, eyes are turning blue
Eyes are turning blue

The Bars of Sevilla
Fire and grace
Go with passion and pace
In the Bars, in the Bars of Sevilla
In the shade of a palm tree
Fanning a smile to her side
She raised her hands in the air
And turned around for a while
Do I know it was real
Or was it all in my mind
Before I could see her face
I let her out of my sight
It was near the arena
A real hot summer day
The sweat came out of the walls
When he happened to cross her way
On a bench at the fountain
Reading a message again
There’s still some time to be killed
Before she can see that man
UNDER SPARKLES OF LIGHT
THEY ARE MOVING WITH PRIDE
IN A POWERFUL CROWD
IN THE BARS OF SEVILLA
FIRE AND GRACE
GO WITH PASSION AND PACE
IN A COLOURFUL CROWD
IN THE BARS OF SEVILLA
In the heat of the bullring
People acclaiming around
The magic flow in his moves
A rose fell to the ground
Una lacrima negra
A little jewel on her face
A seal of the secret might
Deep in her slender grace
Do I know it was real
Or was it just in my mind
When a few hours later
I saw the strangers combined
Some clapping the rythm
The music is breakin’ the chains
Cante palmas baile guitarra
Are setting the bar in flames
UNDER SPARKLES OF LIGHT
THEY ARE MOVING WITH PRIDE
IN A POWERFUL CROWD

Before she can see that man
UNDER SPARKLES OF LIGHT
THEY ARE MOVING WITH PRIDE
IN A POWERFUL CROWD
IN THE BARS OF SEVILLA
FIRE AND GRACE
GO WITH PASSION AND PACE
IN A COLOURFUL CROWD
IN THE BARS OF SEVILLA
In the heat of the bullring
People acclaiming around
The magic flow in his moves
A rose fell to the ground
Una lacrima negra
A little jewel on her face
A seal of the secret might
Deep in her slender grace
Do I know it was real
Or was it just in my mind
When a few hours later
I saw the strangers combined
Some clapping the rythm
The music is breakin’ the chains
Cante palmas baile guitarra
Are setting the bar in flames
UNDER SPARKLES OF LIGHT
THEY ARE MOVING WITH PRIDE
IN A POWERFUL CROWD

Fanning a smile to her side
She raised her hands in the air
And turned around for a while
Do I know it was real
Or was it all in my mind
Before I could see her face
I let her out of my sight
It was near the arena
A real hot summer day
The sweat came out of the walls
When he happened to cross her way
On a bench at the fountain
Reading a message again
There’s still some time to be killed
Before she can see that man

Sun is rising from a warming night
Bringing up an unawakened day
Tickling my senses seeing sunbeams on the wall
Take my hand and you can lead the way
Up hurry up hurry up we have to go
Time for school we cannot take it slow
Somersaults and pillow fights must wait a little while
Don’t like to say it but I told you so.
As I’m walking in the traces of my son
I can see his tiny feet are running down the empty street
as I’m drifting through my memories as a child
To me it seems to be the quintessential meaning of my life
To me it seems to be the quintessential meaning of my life
The quintessential meaning of my life
Snow is melting in the waning light
Bringing up a foggy kind of haze
Rattling my senses casting shadows on the wall
Links my mind to long forgotten days
As I’m walking in the traces of my son
I can see his tiny feet are running down the empty street
as I’m drifting through my memories as a child
To me it seems to be the quintessential meaning of my life
To me it seems to be the quintessential meaning of my life

I can feel a guarding hand is leading me to understand

Padre mio, dammi ascolto..

No doubt I know
Heaven’s above and hell is below
Between is just want and despair

Deus partes tres – Never and ever again
Santo padre del cielo – ti prego di rispondermi
Se abiti dentro di me, come fai a sopportare la mia solitudine?
Three times greater your love,
I bathe in your rays
Melting away in the afterglow
Willing to follow your way
My brain bids my heart to be quiet
Upon you I gaze
Saving myself in your overflow
Three times deeper your grace
Tres – Sweetening lives
Partes tres – Willing to follow your ways

Perché mi devi sottoporre a questi esami difficili per dirmi che mi ami?

Hold On
Worn out senses yearn for peace & quiet
can not level out and sleep at night
Thunderstorms of pictures and sounds are flashing in the brain
Just chemistry will work and kill this pain
Wake up in the morning feels like thrown out of the womb
The sky won’t show no sun today just heavy clouds of gloom
An aching head is wondering how to rise in rank again
You’re born to make as much as you can
Billion people fighting every day
Some will have it all will go astray
A buzzing swarm no time to lose the goal is more and more
Voracity – a breeding ground for war
Now when I take a look at all these souls on planet earth
I barely can believe that help is here the trouble worth
Hollow words are driving the haste and lacking any view
And verily I sing unto you:
Sense of duty, sense of honour, and a sense of family
Sense of balance, sense of beauty, sense of being you and me
Senses are completely dazzled never seem to get it right
Every nerve is simply frazzled are they spoiling for
Are we spoiling for a fight
Hold on, hold on
Hold on, slow down
Slow down and be aware
Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on to your faith
Slow down and be aware
Sense of guilt and sense of crisis and inferiority
Sense of love and sense of humour, sense and sensibility
Sense of right and sense of being and a sense of decency
Finding sense beyond the fence is making sense for you
Making sense for you and me
Hold on, hold on

Atlantic Point of View
What would you like to know about us? Ask and we answer 🙂 – maybe ;-)…
Your questions toAtlantic Popes
Max: a big fish maybe or a lizard.
Bernhard: That sounds like the ultimate question you can ask an artist/musician.
For me, success is first and foremost, like for any other person, a sense of achievement.
You have achieved something, you have made something, created something, so that you are satisfied with it. In my case, that means making a song the way I imagined it. Sometimes different from what I imagined, but with a satisfying result.
THAT is what I consider success.
Everything else is the “outer” success. But that is defined by others.
I can’t say whether it’s a greater success when I see that our song has 1,000,000 streams or when I get a personal message that our song has changed someone’s life. In any case, the second is more touching. But seeing that many people hear it is also a good and successful feeling. For me, there is no magic formula for any kind of success. Imagining it definitely helps.
Max: Firstly, finishing a piece of music against all odds – internal and external – and being happy with it. Secondly, all the feedback from others who enjoy listening to it.
It can’t have anything to do with money, because I haven’t had any significant income from music until today. Not my talent.
I don’t have a key to what success means to me, but a big help in any case is not being depressed.
Bernhard: Something that touches. That can be anything. A melody, the lyrics, the groove, a vocal performance, a single sound, a riff, the overall sound that holds everything together. You only know afterwards. When the song is finished.
And then you believe that everything was important. And even if that’s not true, one thing leads to another and nothing can stand alone.
Max: Yes, the most beautiful thing is when it touches you.
Bernhard: Another ultimate question. And this question is impossible to answer. There are messages, in every song. A different one in every song. Is there an overarching message? Definitely! Even several. But it would spoil the fun of the music for me if we gave away these messages or even paraded them in front of me. Everyone who listens to the music will find the message themselves. Or has his own interpretation. That can be just as true. In any case, our intention is to touch.
Max: I agree.
Bernhard: In general, there is not much difference between the old and the new songs. Maybe the new songs radiate more warmth and serenity.
Max: Maybe they are a bit more mature, I hope they are somehow better.
Max: I am a very visual musician, I really enjoy putting sounds and images together. Until now, I always had an idea immediately when it was said “We need another cover…”. Sometimes the essence comes from another artist, as with Hold On, Morningson, Tres and In The Arts, sometimes I do it all by myself – e.g. Man in The Moon, sometimes I browse through archives of footage providers until I come across something interesting…. Typography is also a topic that has always occupied me.
Bernhard: The profession of a musician is a very serious profession. You don’t experience any funny stories. You sit in the studio around the clock, without daylight, with a serious face, trying to remember what “life” is all about. At the very beginning, 40 years ago, the first thing I learned was what the two biggest lies in the music business are:
The cheque is in the post!
We’ll fix it in the mix!
The third lie would be:
Being a musician is fun.
Max: Ha ha ha. I can’t think of one right now either.
There was no break for us. We have always been in friendly and creative contact during these 20 years. However, we have only ever been able to meet sporadically to make music together.
This had many reasons that you could write novels about and it also frustrated us a bit at times, but actually we ourselves are completely amazed at how quickly this time has passed.
A song is like a baby. You feed it, you raise it, and at some point you have to find the courage to let it go.
We tend to delay that moment.
Until that day when everything feels right like a given.
To be completely honest, we have very different tastes in music. At least that’s what we both believe most of the time.
In truth, it is probably only nuances.
Nevertheless, it’s very amazing that we manage to make our music together, almost completely stress-free.
Very rarely do we get on each other’s nerves with our exotic preferences.
Maybe that’s why we talk so rarely about other music.
Hey Esther, never say never, BUT…for the moment it is not up for discussion at all. Our focus is still on creating new songs in our sound lab.
Hey John, there is no planned release date so far, the album is in the making but not yet completely finished.
To be honest, although we are continuously working on it, sometimes we wish it would go faster. All songs are already written, but the process of finishing them makes them emerge again in a way. How long this will take in the end is, in a way, out of our hands.
We are planning a “normal” album as vinyl and CD, but maybe it will also be a double CD with additional tracks (demos and remixes). From our point of view, a DVD makes little sense nowadays.
Hey Outsider, we met for the first time in Berlin in 1989. Max was looking for a producer for his former project “Echo Romeo” and Bernhard somehow in the mood for adventure and a new musical challenge. He liked Max’s voice and vocals from the beginning and was inspired by the diversity of his songs. Max, for his part, was kicked by a wealth of shared musical inclinations and preferences.
Once we were sure of the key requirements for a collaboration, we took time off to work on the project on the South-West Coast of France. While Max took the culinary responsibility, Bernhard responded with seductive sounds…the perfect matching.
After the creation phase in France the album was recorded at the legendary LunaPark Studio in Berlin and later finished in Bernhard’s home studio. Then in the late 90’s they gave the baby its name before releasing the first Atlantic Popes album in 2001…
Hey Abril, good question! Which pope is which?
At the very beginning, over 20 years ago, it was not quite clear. We then let the fans decide in a voting on the old AtlanticPopes website who is which pope. It was decided that Max is the purple/pink pope and Bernhard is the golden/yellow pope. Accordingly, the pope robes were tailored at that time.
One of these robes can be admired in the official “Hold on” video.
Hey Abril, They were designed and lovingly made by Brigitte Haarke, a dear old friend of Max and fashion designer from Berlin.
Hey @paul.bernd_josch.fan, Max would dedicate „Morningson“ to Bernhard. Bernhard would dedicate „Ice“ to Max.
Hey Andres, Sorry, no experience. We only take hard drugs.
Hey Claudia, The Atlantic feels like home to us. Especially the southwest coast of France with its endlessly long and wide sandy beaches and the sometimes smoky sea exudes a very unique romanticism. There we started to work together intensively and wrote and pre-produced a large part of the first album.
In the word “Popes” there is the word “Pop”. And „Pop” is what we wanted to do. Furthermore, we found it exciting to question the uniqueness of the Pope. There is always only one. But we think that EVERYONE is a pope.
Hey Warren, People are different, some believe in coincidence, others in destiny and fate.
It was certainly more fate than a planned collaboration. Someone brought us together with the idea that we could try to make music together, but it immediately developed an absolutely unique momentum. We met for the first time in Berlin at the end of the 80s. In a restaurant on Kurfürstendamm.
Hey @jotajuancho, Bernhard’s influences come from the time of postpunk and it new waves in the late 70s/early 80s. Especially through the early British electronic bands. And of course from Kraftwerk, Roxy Music and of course David Bowie.
Max is influenced by everything he liked to hear, but nothing so much that he would want to emulate it willy-nilly. He also loves jazz since early childhood and today he listens a lot to African and other world music.
Hey Helen, You can’t really give an answer to that. The universe? The enthusiasm? The creative spirit that breathes into you?
There is no source where you can go and help yourself. It comes from oneself. The external stimuli can be very diverse and must fall on their own fertile ground.
Max likes to start from inner silence in front of a blank page…
Hey @vahidhajid, We want to make pop music. Very mainly electronic pop music. All other stylistic classifications are quite indifferent to us. That’s in the eye of the beholder. We are not fans of narrow pigeonholing. We are open-minded, no ideologists and yet our music should sound unmistakably like us. Call it what you want.
Hey @dj_quatschis_vinyls, We are still in the middle of the work on the second album. When it’s completely finished, it will also be available on CD and Vinyl. It still takes a little while. In addition, the lead time for vinyl production worldwide is insanely long right now.
Hey Carlos, hey @kendo8714, hey @xoplasma, hey @alphaville80s_pics,
At the moment we are not really thinking about live performances, let alone a tour. We would have to think of something special. A somewhat more elaborate concept. That’s not on the agenda at the moment. But you should never say never. Of course it’s not out of the question. UK and Sweden would be a very enjoyable and worthwhile destination for a tour!
Hey Silvana, Yes. That’s definitely the plan. Promised!
Hey Mike, Neither of us has ever had the idea of covering another song. We see ourselves less as interpreting artists, but more as artists who create something completely new. Whereby one must not overinterpret “new”. There is only very rarely something really “new”. As a rule, one is always inspired by something. We can’t think of a song to cover because we perceive music holistically and that’s exactly why we find it holistically great. If you like something all around, you don’t get the idea to remake it. But nevertheless we once did a cover version of “Ceremony” by New Order a long time ago (you can listen to it on Spotify). We did that because of an invitation to a tribute album for New Order.
Your questions toMax
When I started making music, many many – and yet so few – years ago, my biggest dream was to direct films, big feature films. Back then I met Jürgen Erdmann, a musician from Düsseldorf, and we made plans to make something like music videos, which at that time – I guess at least 45 years ago – didn’t exist in the form and as a matter of course as they do today.
Film equipment was unaffordable back then, so we started with the music. With a Juno 60, the corresponding one-step sequencer, a Döpfer sample module with which you could sample 2 seconds and a 4-channel tape machine. At some point we found that our compositions lacked something “human”, vocals were needed. And I was the one of us who hit the notes. So I became a singer.
Then I wrote my first song – “Eyes”, which can be found on the 1st Atlantic Popes album. “Games” was already the second song.
That’s how it was.
No, I never had that wish. I think a classical vocal education – rightly a dream for many – is not the best way for everyone, because such an imprint can also block creativity. Accordingly, Bernhard and I use various softwares without classical notation.
Hold on, I once had an unforgettable coaching week with the great singer and actor Jonathan Kinsler before the release of our first album. This fascinating personality taught me a few very important things for which I am deeply grateful to him.
No, I think everything can change completely at any time.
So far, I can’t remember any noticeable influence of places, although there will be on a subconscious level. But when I’m really in it, in a flow, then I feel more like I’m everywhere. Yes, I think the where is not so relevant for me.
No, although from an appropriately distanced point of view one could observe a kind of egg dance that my colleague Bernd and I, each searching for his own place, perform until something like a joint work finally starts, in the best case a flow emerges. But externally staged rituals: no.
Hey Phil, Atlantic Popes was actually founded in the late 80s by Bernhard and me, although the band name was only given about 10 years later.
Actually there was only one band before Atlantic Popes, it was called “Echo Romeo” and consisted of my friend Jürgen Erdmann and me. In 1985 we released a maxi single on vinyl with the title “Your Tears” on ATA TAK. Funnily enough, “Pyrolator” Kurt Dahlke just informed me a few days ago that he wants to put the song on his next compilation for the label büro-b. What a nice surprise!
I’ve done various things over the years, where have they gone?
Among other things, I worked for a while at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus as an intern on productions and did photographic work and set cards for actors. There were also various small projects with different artists to which I contributed compositions and vocals.
Atlantic Popes is clearly the central project of my artistic work and I hope it will remain that way.
Unfortunately I never learned to play an instrument in the classical sense, but I think I can play around with drums quite well. And at least I know how to play my keyboard to hear what I want.
Your questions toBernhard
Giving up music is not an option. This does not mean that I can not do “something else” professionally.
I have already proven that by working for more than 15 years at JustMusic, a music store in Berlin, in the studio department. But making music has always remained. It will probably always be like that. It is my passion. I found it actually always burdensome to see music as a profession. Forced to “work” music every day from 9 to 5 is not particularly fulfilling. You lose sight of the magic moments.
Just do it. Go for it. Believe in yourself. Stick to the music you have in mind, that you wanna do. Be aware of the magic moments. These moments when something special is happening. Don´t listen too much what other people say, you should do.
Everything is possible.
Everything that you can imagine is possible AND only things you can imagine are possible.
Our music emerges and develops in exchange with each other. Someone has the first idea and then we work on it together.I am the man at the computer. I have the mouse in my hand.
I am the one who implements the ideas…gives them a form. I am interface to the Logic Pro X software we work with. That applies to the area of music.
When it comes to our video art, the whole process is the other way round.
The videos are Max’s absolute domain….and I’m basically watching, criticising and having a few feasible ideas.
Basically, nothing has changed for me. Of course I’ve slowed down and sometimes it’s harder to keep my concentration. Of course, over the years, you gain experience that supposedly brings you further, you gather know-how, you can implement ideas in a more targeted way. You think you know how “everything” works with music. But actually it’s still about that magic moment with the feeling of complete enthusiasm. That moment when I realise that I myself get touched by the music that is being created. That hasn’t changed at all over all these years.
Did I say that? Yes, it may well be that I give the impression of being a “workaholic”, although I actually see myself as quite lazy. Sometimes it takes a long time to achieve the result I have in mind, and my meticulousness and perfectionism mean that I „waste” a lot of time on work. I am not sure if it is an addiction. Who knows?
I don’t make much of a distinction between work and leisure. For me, it’s all an integral part of the whole life I’m involved in. I like to lose myself in thoughts….until I find myself again.
Spontaneously, I will always say that the one I am working on is the most significant.
When I look at all the songs, however, there are two that stand out. “Ice” from the first album because it’s a beautiful song and it fully corresponded to my sound aesthetics at that time and of course “Hold on”, a multi-layered song both in terms of content and arrangement and which we had actually already given up on and we managed to pull it off at exactly the right moment.
There are many things I still want to experience, but nothing is mandatory. I would like to make a lot more beautiful music and I would like to see peace on this little blue-green planet.
It’s always those personal moments of happiness when a song is created and you have that flash thought, “This is it….this is beautiful!” That unique goosebump feeling.
Beyond that, there have been many beautiful moments in the last almost 40 years, all of which I can’t even remember.
Oh yes, I can consider myself lucky. I love singers with expression, like Marian and Max have.
And yes, there are some other vocalists whose singing impresses me. Of course, I have to mention David Bowie first. Probably Freddie Mercury was the better singer, but Bowie’s expression, his special timbre ultimately touches me more.
As a singer, Annie Lennox is the greatest for me.
